Nike was founded by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman. Knight was a middle distance runner and studied accounting at the University of Oregon. Bowerman was Knight's training coach and it was their love of sports, technology and apparel that brought them together. While in Japan, Knight started to import Japanese running shoes to the USA. He worked for Onitsuka Tiger but wanted to create his own brand of footwear. The company was founded in 1964 by Knight and Boweman and it was officially called Nike in 1971. After returning from World War I, Adolf "Adi" Dassler who made sports shoes in his Mother's laundry room in Germany, was the founder of Adidas. Along with his older brother, they opened a factory in 1924 called the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory. Adidas expanded from just making quality sports shoes to apparel such as clothing, bags, jewellery, accessories and more. Vans was born in 1966, when Paul Van Doren and his three partners opened their first store. The company was called the Van Doren Rubber Company and they would manufacture shoes directly to public. Products that were manufactured for customers in the morning, were available to collect later the same day. 12 pairs of custom shoes were made on the first day of business. Vans had great success with skateboarders all over California and the Vans era was established. by the 1970's, Vans had opened 70 stores in California alone and shoes were even being sold internationally. In 2004, Vans Launched 'Vans Customs', which enabled designers and people who wanted to be different to create their own unique version of the classic slip-ons, choosing from hundreds of colour combinations.
